Ramp data shows AI spending stalling just as Anthropic nears its IPO
The decoupling of rising AI usage from revenue growth suggests that fierce price competition and model commoditization may limit the financial returns of frontier AI labs.
What happened
A new report from Ramp shows that corporate AI spending growth slowed to 1.5% across August and September despite rising token volumes, driven by steep API price cuts from OpenAI and Anthropic as well as more efficient model routing by customers. This spending plateau coincides with both Anthropic and OpenAI lowering their target valuations ahead of major fundraising events and Anthropic's upcoming IPO.
