As search traffic dries up, Reddit announces it’s shifting to a logged-in experience
This marks a major shift away from the open web as one of the internet's most important sources of human-generated training data walls off its content in response to AI search and scraping.
What happened
Reddit announced during its Q3 earnings call that it is transitioning to a primarily logged-in experience as AI-powered search significantly reduces its web referral traffic. The move aims to protect its platform from unauthorized AI scraping, preserve its lucrative AI data-licensing business, and increase advertising revenue per user despite declining U.S. daily active users. Reddit will begin testing the changes in select markets outside the U.S. in the fourth quarter.
