US investigated Chinese spy plot aimed at Nvidia CEO
This highlights the intensifying national security scrutiny and geopolitical espionage risks surrounding the global AI hardware supply chain and U.S. export controls.
What happened
U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly surveilled Alice Huang, an executive at Singapore AI cloud firm Megaspeed, over concerns she was acting as a Chinese spy to gather information from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Officials feared she was attempting to learn about Nvidia's plans and its lobbying regarding AI chip export restrictions, especially as Megaspeed was previously investigated for helping Chinese firms bypass U.S. export rules. Nvidia denied the concerns, stating that the CEO's interactions with the executive were routine customer meetings involving no sensitive or national security information.
